After Five Years Of Trying..
I might actually get the chance to pay face value for a decent ticket to a Sox game at Fenway Park this season. Although after reading the email in more detail, I noticed that the availability of the tickets will be mixed and “will mostly include standing room and obstructed view grandstand tickets”. Manly Slang from the 19th Century
While writing our first book, The Art of Manliness: Classic Skills and Manners for the Modern Man, we decided to throw a few old-time 19th century slang words into the text just for fun. While scouring old dictionaries for some words that would fit in the book, we came across many others that were beyond awesome but didn’t make the cut. Here’s a glossary of our favorite manly slang that...

How To Adjust Your Withholding
It’s tax time of year again, and it’s a good time to remember to check that your paycheck withholding is correct. The IRS said that last year more than 110 million taxpayers got refunds averaging $2,753 apiece.  That’s called overwithholding, and it can be corrected by simply filing a revised Form W-4 with your employer.  The information you provide on the W-4 when you’re...

Easier Way To Back Up Your Data
Lately I’ve been trying Dropbox, which is a web-based file backup tool that synchronizes across multiple computers.  So far I’m really impressed.  I used to find that I did all my work on one computer (my desktop), because that’s where most of the data was saved. But with Dropbox, I can download the tool on both my desktop and laptop, create folders and put the files in them, and...

You Can’t Get There From Here
You can’t get there from here By Andy Woodruff on 22 December 2009 Apparently in Maine they have a saying, “you can’t get there from here” (spoken in a Maine accent), said when giving directions as an observation of the impossibility of traveling a direct route between certain places. It seems to have something to do with lakes and the organization of roads in the vast rural areas of the...

Fantasy Football Trade Analyzer
Analyzing the fairness of trades between owners can be one of the stickier parts of the job of being a fantasy football commissioner.  :) So when I ran across this trade analyzer put together by Accuscore, I was instantly intrigued.  Given how popular fantasy football has become, I’ve often wondered why there isn’t something like this readily available.  I’ve even spent...

What To Do With An Old 401(k) Balance
A lot of people leave the money they’ve accumulated in a retirement account with an old employer when they resign and go to a new company.  With the job market such as it is now, it’s not unusual for somebody to have two, three or even more retirement accounts spread across that same number of former employers either. When I get asked about what to do with these funds, the question...

Language Cheats
I love Google.  They just continue to roll out new, free tools. Google Translate is one of their newest services, and it offers the ability to translate words from one language to another as you type, in real time.  If you upload a document, it will translate the entire text to the language of your choice.  It also has a speech feature that helps you determine how to say a word with just a click...

The U.S. House of Presumptuous Meddlers
As an American, I am embarrassed that the U.S. House of Representatives has 220 members who actually believe the government can successfully centrally plan the medical and insurance industries. I’m embarrassed that my representatives think that government can subsidize the consumption of medical care without increasing the budget deficit or interfering with free choice. It’s a...

Borrowing Our Way To Economic 'Recovery'
This chart from the Congressional Budget Office shows the actual and projected U.S. budget surplus/deficit in the 2000’s.  Recent levels of government spending are absolutely staggering (and costs related to proposed healthcare reform aren’t even included here). There are good arguments to be made that the government’s actions over the past 2 years have saved us from the...

Tanker Truck Full of Coffee
My first thought as I came up behind this truck was “It would be both strange and disgusting if that tanker was filled with coffee, but why else would they plaster the word in huge lettering on the back of their truck?” This can’t be the reaction the marketing folks at Pilot, which has a chain of gas stations, were going for when they designed that advertising campaign. ...

Google Just Made Garmin Pretty Irrelevant
Google just introduced another product.  It’s called Google Maps Navigation, and it provides GPS guided turn-by-turn navigation for free. What Really Goes on When the House Convenes
Gotta love this photo of Connecticut House Minority Leader Lawrence F. Cafero Jr., R-Norwalk (standing on far right) making an impassioned plea against a Democratic-written budget last month.  Seems like a picture of a normal debate on the floor of a State House of Representatives, right? But look closer at colleagues Rep. Barbara Lambert, D-Milford, and Rep. Jack F. Hennessy, D-Bridgeport,...

Finance Your New Lamborghini!
I chuckled when I saw this story today.  Evidently, for the first time, you can now purchase one of Lamborghini’s $345,000 sports cars on credit.  According to Cars.com’s Kicking Tires, here’s how the financing terms work: “The offers include 5.9% for a 12-year term. Yes, 12 years. If you have really good credit, including a credit score of more than 740, you can get 0%...

Telegraph to Texting to Twitter - Communication...
Just read an excellent article by Ellen Gibson in this week’s Business Week about how Twitter, Facebook and other newer forms of social media face some of the same sort of skepticism today that older forms of communication did when they were first invented. A few examples from the book: Socrates objected to writing, partly because the new “invention” eliminated the need to...

Checking The Unit Price
Do you ever notice the unit price of the items you buy at the grocery store?  It’s amazing how much things cost in terms of standard measures of weight (i.e., quart, gallon). For example, this 1/2 oz bottle of Zicam I saw at the local Safeway this week was selling for $14.49.  That means it would cost almost $1,000 for a quart of it!! I’m having trouble coming up with anything...

How To Turn $1 into $0.08
Great chart from zerohedge.com that a guy named Sean W. Malone put together.  Download the full-size image for best effect..
